IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT THE HOUSE:

Outdoor Lights (path and driveway): The driveway and front door lights are motion sensitive. The directions on how to over ride the sensors are on the refrigerator door. Please leave the switches just inside the front door as you found them (on). There is a light by the front door which is also sensor controlled by the same switch that does the driveway lights. There are two switches for the path/steps flood light, one is also located inside the front door and the other on the downhill side of the post with the "Seldom-In" sign at the top of the path/steps.

Parking: You reach the entrance to the driveway just beyond the Seldom-In sign on the left. Turn sharply to the left to enter. Lights for the entrance to the house are controlled with a motion sensor and will turn on as you approach. You may want to back down the driveway. If there is a lot snow, you might feel more comfortable parking at the top of the path by the sign.

REMEMBER THAT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO PLOW THE DRIVEWAY WITH CARS IN IT.

Heat: Each room has its own electric heat and thermostat. PLEASE DO NOT allow anything to touch the heater elements, fire is a real possibility. If not using a room, we ask that you turn the heat off and shut the door (except the bathrooms). The heat under the kitchen sink should stay on all the time to prevent frozen pipes--the fan runs when house is empty.

Water: Comes from our well out by the field. The switch opposite the downstairs bathroom runs the pump, and the blue knob controls the supply into the house. To turn the water off or on, just close (turn to right) or open (turn to left) the knob, and flip the switch appropriately. If you are turning the water off, after flipping the switch and turning the knob, you must open a faucet in the downstairs bathroom and the kitchen sink faucet to drain the water lines. This is our best insurance against frozen pipes. If you are turning the water on, you will find these faucets open. Close them after the water is running smoothly.

Hot Water: The on-off switch is on the wall opposite the downstairs bathroom. It takes 2-3 hours (max) to heat a full tank . It's best to plan ahead and stagger use, there is plenty for 4-5 quick showers in succession, but not enough to do laundry, dishes and take showers within a couple of hours.

OTHER THINGS ABOUT THE HOUSE

American Flag: It is a house tradition that it be flown from the post at the top of the path when the house is occupied. Fly it if you wish--just don't burn it!! It is stored behind the front door.

Cuckoo Clock: You can set it by gently moving the minute hand clockwise to the correct time. To stop, just stop the pendulum.

Deck Closet: The BBQ equipment and deck chairs are stored here. The keys are on the wall next to the stove to the right of the door going out to the deck.

Dishwasher: It's probably best to rinse dishes first....Runs pretty much like all others. If you use up the dishwasher soap...it would be appreciated if you could replace with a new box.

Fire Extinguisher: There are two...one over the refrigerator and one downstairs on the wall opposite the bathroom.

Fireplace: The flue handle is up inside the chimney on the right. It slips occasionally which can make for a smokey room. Definately check to confirm it is open before you light the fire. Keep the logs back in the grate to prevent smoke in the room. Please use the screen at all times, especially when no one is watching the fire. At the end of the evening and the fire is dying down, please close the glass doors to prevent the heat in the room from escaping up the flue and the fire will die down more slowly and safely. The wood closest to the front door is the driest and the kindling is right out side the front door. If you could refill the wood pile before leaving the house it would be greatly appreciated.

Games: There are games in the right cabinet under the bar.

Garbage: The town picks up our garbage from the bin on the road to the left of the path looking down at the house. The RED side of the piece of wood indicates garbage to be picked up--they come on Mondays.

Garbage disposal: Works great but no bones, onion skins, metal spoons, etc. please! Remember to run the water when using. The switch is on the wall in fron of the sink. An Allen wrench is in the cabinet to the right above the sink on the inside left wall up on a nail. You can use it to free the disposal if it is stuck.

Hot Tub: See attached sheet.

Laundry: New in 1998! Fairly self-explanatory. There are instructions on top of the washer and dryer.

Outside Flood Lights: The switch for the flood lights outside the living room window is behind the radio, below the indoor-outdoor thermometer on the bar in the living room. Enjoy them but PLEASE remember to turn them off when you go to bed...THANKS!

Paper products: Extra paper towels, toilet paper, etc. are kept in the metal container under the sink in the downstairs bathroom.

Phone: The phone is set up so that only operator assisted (credit card, collect) long distance calls can be made. Local calls to Pittsfield, Rochester, Killington/Sherburne and Rutland can be dialed directly.

Radio: Vermont Public Radio is 89.5 FM. WRUT (local Rutland) is 98.3 FM, WEBK (Killington) is 105.3 FM.

Recycling: Town sponsored for newspapers, glass, aluminium. Just leave the separated bags next to the garbage shed when you leave the garbage. Pick up for recycling is the second Monday of each month.

Smoke detectors: There are two, one upstairs above the stairs another downstairs in the hall ceiling. Please notify us if the battery goes out in either of them.

Stove: If the oven suddenly doesn't work, check the timer dials on the right front of the stove.

Ski Room: Use the tools on the workbench if you need them. Please use the plastic to protect the rug under the bench if you are waxing your skis. This is a good place to store your skis instead of the front hall if you want to bring them inside the house.

T.V./VCR: The VCR is built into the base of the TV and plays on channel 3. The small remote controls it and the TV/Satellite power. Use the large remote for all satellite functions. Press the "DSS" key to activate the receiver and use the "Guide" or "memu-select" buttons to find channels. The volume is controlled from the small remote. For special programming help, the phone number is listed on the front page of the guide. The availble channels are listed on the front of the TV Info envelope kept on the bottom shelf of the bookcase...next to the TV.

Vacuum: Kept in the laundry room.

Hot Tub: Chemistry: (supplies are on the bench in the ski tuning room.) Before each use, it is most important to check that the Sanitizer concentration (we use cholrine, not bromine) is correct (for obvious reasons), and that the Ph and alkalinity are correct for comfort. Well before you plan to use the tub, check the chemistry with a test strip. Then turn on the jets and sprinkle a heaping capful of the appropraite chemical onto the water surface where it flows back into the filter. The jet pump will disperse it quickly. You can turn off the jets after 5 minutes, then wait half an hour to an hour and test the chemistry again and adjust further if needed. It may take two or three tries to ge it right. It is easiest to get all the chemicals in blance by first gettign the Ph close to right. (The Sanitizer is designed to be Ph neutral, but in fact, does increase Ph slightly).

After each use, it is good practice to throw a capful of Sanitizer into the tub and let the jets run for a few minutes before replacing the cover. This way the chemistry will probably not need adjustment before the next use.

If you accidently put in too much Sanitizer, leave the jets running and the concentration will come down by itself in an hour or two.

Temperature: We leave it at 100 F even when the house is empty so the tub doesn't freeze in a power outage. Most people like the tub a little warmer, 102 to 104. Allow an hour or two for the tub to reach higher temperatures. (ut-1 through ut-4 are even higher temperatures, perhaps as much a 106 F.)

Cover: Release the four hold down straps, fold the cover back on itself, and slide it outboard onto the special supports outside the railing. Please don't lift the cover or move it by the hold down straps, they will tear off. When you leave, please refasten all four hold down straps.

House suggestions:

1. We have found that if one person is the "tub master"--the one testing and adding, it is easier than everyone taking turns.

2. You will find two switches that control the flood light for the tub..one on the outside of the door leading to the tub and the other on the left hand railing on the platform facing the tub.

3. We suggest that you wear something on your feet while going out to the tub...stones are hard and cold (snowy) on the feet and dirt/pine needles can accumulate on the deck or even get into the tub.

4. Please not food while using the tub.

5. When you completely finished using the tub for the week-end, please reset the temperature at 100.

PROBLEMS:

Frozen Pipes: Turn the water supply off quickly and call Gim Kingsley the plumber at 767-9521.

Heavy Snowfall: Get to the mountain early for some great skiing!!! The road is plowed by the town usually early in the morning and as soon as possible during and after a snowfall. If you can't get up the road park in the emergency lot by the pond and walk to the house. If your car gets stuck look in the phonebook...there are a number of options listed in Rochester and Killington. Cora Ellis may be able to suggest someone more local her number is listed on the front sheet.

Expect snow to slide off the steep roof and icicles to form as the winter progresses.

Very Cold Temperatures: Plan ahead. Use the dipstick heater (kept in the chest in the single bedroom), plug in your car if you have an engine block heater, or start your car every 2-3 hours.

Electricity Black-Out: This happens very occasionally. If it persists and you suspect the temperature will go below freezing in the house turn water supply off. Candles and hurricane shade lamps will provide light, flashlight in front hall and of course the fireplace will continue to add some warmth. Call CVPS to report loss of electricity.

Things about Pittsfield and the local area

There are three stores in town and one gas station. The Country Butcher has the greatest variety for grocery as well as good meats, chicken and fish. It is located just south of the village green south on Route 100. The Pittsfield General Store (on the corner where you turn to go up to the house) has newspapers (you can order the New York Times daily or Sunday a day ahead), deli, Pizza and basic shopping needs. It also has extensive video rentals. Pitt Stop is the store/gas station across from the general store. The post office is in the same building.

There is a Health Center at Pico with a pool.

Summer in Pittsfield area (Killington, Rutland, Rochester and Woodstock) offers a wide variety of opportunities such as tennis, golf, swimming, auctions, antiquing, good dining. The Mountain Times weekly newspaper tells you what's happening. There is an alpine slide (Pico) and a gondola ride to the top of Killington mountain.

Swimming--in the fire pond at the bottom of the Hawk road and two places in the White River along Route 107 headed towards Bethel. One is at the first bridge and the second just a bit further down the road...before Gaysville. A third is by the tennis courts off Route 100 just past the 107/100 junction and the Alyson's restaurant on the right.

Tennis--north on Route 100 just beyond the 107/100 junction are two all weather tennis courts. If you come to the sharp turn over the White River, you've gone too far. Killington has a school for tennis and there are other courts at the Summit Lodge (on the Killington access road) and Cortina Inn (on Route 4 going towards Rutland.)

Golf--A new public course, Green Mountain National, has just opened on Route 100 just north of the Gray Bonnet Inn and the junction of Route 100/4. Killington has a public course and there's one in Rutland. There is a "low key", inexpensive 9 hole golf course north on Route 100 in Rochester just before you enter the town.

Horseback riding--I believe there are some horses at Chittenden Inn and possible in Rochester. There could also be some riding in the Woodstock area. the yellow pages might help as well as The Mountain Times newspaper.
